Teas that are produced without the use of synthetic pesticides or herbicides must be certified to be sold as organic. Organic certification is voluntary, but farmers and processors who choose to become certified must follow strict guidelines of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Organic production is typically more labor-intensive, requires additional land for crops to flourish, is environmentally friendly, and produces healthier crops. Organic teas may cost more than conventional teas, but many people believe that the benefits outweigh the cost because organic teas are more flavorful than non-organic teas and offer health benefits.
